Hawaii Kai Real Estate - Community Information

Hawaii Kai began life as a planned community built by famous developer Henry Kaiser. Early doubters of the project were proved wrong as the homes sold out quickly and profitably. Hawaii Kai was built on the southeastern corner of Oahu, approx 9.5 miles from downtown Honolulu.

Today, 28,000 people have made this place home. A large percentage of them were attracted by the chance to live right on the water. Some houses even come with parking for your boat – on the marina that is just outside your back door. Even the most stressful days are forgotten once you’re out on the water.
There’s more to this neighborhood than the marina, though. Towards the mountain are houses and condominiums that offer their own special benefits. Some lucky locals have a birds-eye view that is unbeatable. On a clear day they can see the Island of Molokai in the distance. At times they can even see Lanai and Maui!
Kaiser developed 521 acres, creating the marina from one of the ancient ponds that the area is famous for. Hawaii Kai's zip code, which includes the Portlock district, is the richest in Hawaii. Despite that honor it does not have the exclusive aura of Kahala. Locals are proud of the fact that they have formed a thriving community.
Though it lacks the type of beaches that attract those looking to lie out in the sun, Hawaii Kai is still very popular with ocean lovers. In addition to the marina residents with all of their boats, Hawaii Kai is also home to a few local paddling teams, including Hui Nalu, founded by Duke Kahanamoku.
The lack of beaches has a silver lining. Locals do not have to deal with the crowds and parking problems that go with living near those attractions. If you do feel the need to hit the sand and surf, you can do so very easily.

Sandy Beach and Mokapuu are only a short drive away. Best of all, world famous Hanauma Bay and its stunning collection of colorful tropical fish is just up the road. Swimming through entire schools of these fish is an unforgettable experience. People from all over the world travel thousands of miles to see these wonders once. As a Hawaii Kai homeowner, they’re almost on your doorstep.
At Christmas the marina hosts a parade of boats, large and small, that are decorated and lit up for the holidays. While some stick with December 25th theme, others go for a unique, non-seasonal look. One this year was set up as an Egyptian royal barge, including fan-waving slaves, dancing girls and the pharaoh’s family. It’s guaranteed to get you in a festive mood that fits the season.
3 shopping complexes - Hawaii Kai Town Center, Hawaii Kai Office Center and Koko Head Marina provide all your daily needs, from groceries and dining to movie theaters and surfing gear. No need to make a long trek for any essentials. You can grab and go in minutes.
Whether you live deep in the valley, on the marina, or high up on the ridges, Hawaii Kai has a lot to offer. Great views, quiet evenings and the potential to experience the best of Hawaii just a quick jaunt up the road.
