Living in Waikiki
What is there to do in Waikiki? Frankly, you’d get a lot of the same answers if you were a tourist. But with one advantage. You’ll be living there year round, so all the options are open. Need an example?
In September, the Aloha festival begins, lasting a week on Oahu. It all starts with a parade displaying the talents and culture of the Native Hawaiians. Which brings up another point. Waikiki is ground zero for almost every parade held on the island. 2006 will see 60(!) parades make their way down Kalakaua Avenue over the course of the year. That’s more than 1 a week, though some times are busier than others. There is proposed legislation to limit the number of parades to 39 per year, brought by Waikiki residents who are less festive.
Returning to Aloha Week, Kalakaua is roped off and stages are erected down the street, showcasing different musical styles, dance groups and other entertainments, the emphasis on the arts that come from the Islands.
For those looking for fine dining, Waikiki is home to many restaurants that are not only among the best in the state, they’ll satisfy any gourmand. Not looking for a full meal? High tea in the Manoa Courtyard is notable for its clear ocean view and for its history. It was from that courtyard that the ‘Hawaii Calls’ radio show broadcast for over 4 decades. Many legendary Hawaii performers performed there for the audience that, at times, numbered in the millions. As you sit there under the famous banyan tree, drink in the history.

Kapiolani Park
If you’re looking for something more physical to occupy your time, the Kapiolani Park, located at the base of Diamond Head is full of options. The city maintains tennis courts there, which are easily available. Another favorite place for joggers, weekends find the park full of different activities – soccer, baseball, cricket – there’s even an archery range. If you’re in a more leisurely mood, it’s a great place to just picnic and take in the scenery. Right across the street is the beach; so working up a sweat can be remedied easily by a quick dip.
Located in Kapiolani Park is the Waikiki Shell, where watching a concert takes on another dimension as the seating is all outdoors. With the year round beautiful weather, an evening spent at the Shell is an always enjoyable break from whatever stress you’ve experienced during the week.

Waikiki Shell
Lastly, we’ll close with one of our favorite benefits of living in Waikiki. Every evening at 6:30 PM, local entertainers put on a show featuring Hawaiian music and troupes of hula dancers, ranging from old pros to children whose talents are equally as good. And it happens every evening on Waikiki Beach. If there’s a better way to spend the dusk hours, we haven’t heard about it.
